Default The Kiwi (not Qiwi)

One coin of NZD Features the Kiwi, New Zealand's national bird.
NZ has many rare birds since. All NZD notes show on their back unique birds of NZ.
The New Zealand dollar (currency code NZD) is the currency of New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, and the Pitcairn Islands since 1967. It is normally abbreviated with the dollar sign $, or alternatively NZ$ to distinguish it from other dollar-denominated currencies. It is often informally known as the "Kiwi (dollar)" and is divided into 100 cents.

Explanation above is a good one --

the Kiwi is our National bird (a flightless nocturnal bird - being preserved so as not to go extinct).

All native born New Zealanders are also call Kiwis (I am one

Anything native to New Zealand is called "Kiwi ... " -- example the Kiwi Dollar

No kidding. I always thought it had something to do with the furry little fruit, not a bird.

No the kiwifruit is an adopted branding name for the Chinese gooseberry. FxDoc is spot on in terms of our icon identity a flightless nocturnal bird.

Default Or is it shoe polish?

Some people would say:

Forget the bird, forget the fruit.

It is the famous show-polish cream!
